Text2Speech For iPhone Converts User Specified Text Strings Into Voice

At one point or another I am pretty sure everyone has wanted their iPhone to be able to communicate with them. For those who are lucky enough to have the iPhone 4S, Apple’s Siri voice assistant probably has you covered in the human to device communications department, but for the rest of us; Cydia has come up trumps again with the Text2Speech app. Text2Speech has been around on Cydia for a while, but is one of those nice little apps that manages to raise a smile on our faces every time we use it.

The title of the app pretty much sums up its functionality. After downloading, users are invited to enter a text string into the supplied text field at the top of the main screen. When finished, the app simply converts the entered text into speech and reads it out loud. Being able to make a device read about some written words is hardly a new thing, so we don’t expect you to be blown away by this, but it is kind of cool to play around with on the iPhone.

The app comes with a number of in-app configurable options including the ability to choose from one of four preset voices. The voices can then be customized further by altering the pitch, variance and speed of the voice. The app generates a .wav file, containing the speech which is stored on the device in the /var/mobile/Documents directory and therefore could be pulled off the device with a little bit of SSH knowledge, if required. Text2Speech also keeps a track of all converted text strings through a historical timeline which can be deleted if required.

Text2Speech is available as a free of charge download from the ModMyi repository.

SMSNinja For iPhone Blocks Incoming SMS/MMS And Calls Using A Highly Effective Firewall

Everyone loves a bit of privacy every now and then, and let’s face it, I am pretty sure that everyone has given their cell phone number out to someone that they later regretted giving it to for one reason or another. You would expect, that in this advanced day and age when smartphones play such an increasingly important and prominent role in our everyday lives, we would have a native filtering option on the device, or at very least our networks would be able to provide such a service.

Unfortunately the networks don’t have such a service and our smartphones can’t block incoming calls or messages for us, so that is where the likes of SMSNinja come in if you are fortunate enough to have a jailbroken iPhone but need to block people from contacting it. The app aims to be a highly effective firewall that allows the user to filter, block and hide things like incoming texts and media messages as well as phone calls. One of the things that actually makes this different from other software which offers similar functionality is that it actually allows rules to be set for messages that contain certain keywords, not just blocking every incoming message from a certain number like others.

SMSNinja has quite a substantial read me section which is a highly recommended read due to the complexity of the app. It essentially works around the premise of white and black lists that allow the user to define certain people or numbers that you want to either block from contacting them, or allow contacts if they seem fit. As well as being able to quickly set up these lists, SMSNinja also has a large settings section for users who want to get a little bit more advanced with their blocking and filtering. The settings allows the native Messages and Phone apps to be locked and password protected, meaning no outsider can access them.

SMSNinja certainly seems to offer all of the functionality that one would need for blocking certain individuals from contacting them and can be downloaded free of charge from the ModMyi repository.

vWallpaper 2: Video Wallpaper Tweak For iPhone Updated With iOS 5 Compatibility – Download Now

The Android versus iOS debate will never end. The two operating systems have their die hard fans who will argue until they are blue in the face about why their chosen OS is better than its rivals. No matter which side of the fence you sit on, I’m sure any reasonable person can concede that each operating system has its plus points.

Some users believed that one of the more admirable features of the Android operating system was the ability to be able to set live wallpapers on the devices home screen, allowing a higher level of device customization. For those that have no idea what a live wallpaper is, it is the ability to set an animated image behind the application icons to provide a flashy, video type effect.

Up until iOS release 2.X, iOS devices didn’t have this ability, and had to rely on having static images set as a wallpaper. As usual in these circumstances the jailbreak development community stepped up to the plate with a developer known as ‘skrew’ producing the initial version of a complex tweak called vWallpaper which as the name suggests allows custom created videos to be used as a dynamic wallpaper.

The vWallpaper tweak exists purely as eye candy, to create a more engaging and aesthetically pleasing device and has often been used in conjunction with WinterBoard themes to highly personalize a device. The good news for all those theme lovers and aesthetic tweakers out there is that to coincide with the recent release of an untethered iOS 5 jailbreak the developer has released an iOS 5 compatible version of vWallpaper via his Cydia repository.

vWallpaper version 2 is currently in a beta stage and offers the ability to add videos, cool effects (particles, 3D objects), HTML widgets and more on your Springboard and device’s lock screen. The developer hopes that vWallpaper 2 will help bring those freshly jailbroken iOS 5 devices to life.

One major issue of previous versions of vWallpaper is the effect that is has on battery life. Earlier iterations of the tweak have decimated the iPhone battery due to the constant running of a looping video in the background. Android fans will be quick to jump in with the argument that this doesn’t happen to the same extent on an Android device due to the way it handles the animation via Java and HTML5. One can only imagine that if video enabled wallpapers were native in iOS then Apple would handle the approach more elegantly but until that time the vWallpaper release is an extremely accomplished offering.

You can add the developer’s Cydia repository by navigating to the ‘Manage‘ tab, selecting ‘Sources‘ and then adding http://deb.danstaface.net. The current beta stage release is free of charge and downloads at a 31.3MB file size.

Fix iOS 4.3.3 JailbreakMe 3.0 Vulnerability With PDF Patcher 2 To Avoid iOS 4.3.4 In Future

If you’ve been keeping a close eye to the news over the last few days, you’re probably aware of JailbreakMe 3.0, a simple untethered jailbreak that takes advantage of a PDF exploit in Mobile Safari. The wizards in the jailbreak community have engineered a fix that manages to preserve the jailbreak, at the same time as it stops unsuspecting users from launching a harmful PDF and having their devices taken over.

This tweak is simple to apply and requires nothing more than an Internet connection. Just launch Cydia, search for "PDF Patcher 2″ and install the first (and, as of the time of this writing, only) result. The only thing you’ll need is a jailbroken iOS 4.3.3 device.

JailbreakMe 3.0 was first unintentionally leaked over the weekend and has since taken the jailbreaking community by storm, since it’s the first untethered jailbreaking solution for the iPad 2, although it also works with any iPod touch or iPhone. Unlike other tethered solutions, JailbreakMe doesn’t require the device to be plugged in, in order to be booted into a jailbroken state. The official version was then released to the public a few hours ago.

In order to mitigate this issue, Apple is said to be working around the clock to release iOS 4.3.4, a final update for iOS 4 before the final version of iOS 5 drops this fall. While the latter is a great priority for Apple, the company feels that a fix for the PDF exploit just can’t wait, since many customers would otherwise be left at risk. It’s important to remember that although the vulnerability is used by a very well-known jailbreaking tool, it can also be used to compromise the security of many users. Yet, it’s advisable that you skip iOS 4.3.4 and install PDF Patcher instead, since it has the same effect, yet it preserves your jailbreak.

Similarly to previous versions of JailbreakMe, this new version requires little to none iOS skills, or a computer connection. Those intending to jailbreak their devices simply need to launch Mobile Safari and point it to JailbreakMe.com. Within a few minutes, the device will be fully jailbroken.

You can now be confident that you’ll be safe from this nasty exploit and still maintain your jailbreak. With this fix, you can skip iOS 4.3.4 altogether, if it indeed becomes available.

Apple Orders 15 Million iPhone 5 Units From Supplier For September Launch

According to a report, Apple has ordered as many as 15 million iPhone 5’s from Pegatron, a well-known computer manufacturing contractor. The new iPhones are expected to start shipping in September 2011, which is in line with previous reports.

Pegatron is reportedly aggressively hiring at its Shanghai, China plants to make room for manufacturing for Apple, which has recently contracted Pegatron to assemble CDMA-based iPhones (mainly for use within the Verizon network in the US).

Due to its cooperation with Apple for iPhone 4, Pegatron, in 2010, significantly expanded its plants, human power and equipment aiming satisfy the orders for 10 million CDMA iPhone 4s; however, since the Apple’s CDMA iPhone 4 sales were lower than expected in the first quarter of 2011, Pegatron shipped less than four million CDMA iPhone 4s, causing the company’s utilization rate to drop to only 50% with its gross margin also drop to 1.8% in the quarter.

According to the source, and in line with previous reports, the next-generation iPhone isn’t expected to include any major design changes, instead focusing on improving the hardware. If previous reports are to be believed, the iPhone 5 will sport a faster dual-A5 processor, as opposed to the single-core A4 currently built into the iPhone 4, and an 8-megapixel camera, instead of the 5-megapixel one found on the current iPhone.

Most of the work assembling the iPhone has been traditionally given to Foxconn, which is also responsible for putting together many of Apple’s products, including MacBooks. Pegatron is reportedly attempting to become just as big in the manufacturing of Apple products, such as iPads and MacBooks, although it hasn’t been successful as of yet:

Pegatron has also been aggressive striving for iPad or Macbook orders from Apple, but due to the products’ existing makers are defending their orders, Pegatron currently still has not yet achieved any progress.

Over the past decade, most major electronics manufacturers have felt the need to hire other companies to assemble their products, so that they can focus on research and development. Manufacturing giants like Foxconn have built their footprint exclusively through putting together hardware for major hardware makers, including Apple, Dell and Hewlett-Packard. Although both Foxconn and Pegatron will be responsible for assembling iPhone 5′s, all devices should look and behave the same way, regardless of who has assembled them.

The next-generation iPhone has reportedly reached final testing stages and is now being passed around executives at both carriers and Apple. The new phone is expected to be announced at a music event in September.
